Once a year is a good rule of thumb, however if you burn a lot of wood, poorly dried wood or a lot of sappy Old Man Pine, it could need more frequent attention. Insurance companies require one sweep a year.

Rotary power sweeping is done from below and uses flexible nylon strands spun rapidly at 400rpm. The strands automatically take on the dimensions of the chimney to repeatedly rub the soot away. It is very very effective and saves the trouble and danger of climbing on the roof. However when appropriate I am equipped to sweep from above using old school rods and a wire brush.
The legend goes that in 1066, King William was saved by a chimney sweep, who pushed him away from an oncoming carriage. The King was so happy, he invited the chimney sweep to his daughter’s wedding and that’s why chimney sweeps are considered good luck, especially if a bride sees one on her wedding day.
